Northeast Avalon Towns to Develop Coastal Resource Inventory

Northeast Avalon Towns to Develop Coastal Resource Inventory

St. John’s, NL – The Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador has hired an intern to work for the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board (NEA REDB) and the towns of Bauline, Flatrock and Pouch Cove.

Intern Julia Pantin will be working with the towns of Bauline, Flatrock and Pouch Cove to develop and implement a coastal resource inventory which will produce a series of maps illustrating the distribution of natural resources off the coasts of these communities. These maps will document fisheries, bird, marine mammal and aquatic plant resources as

Christine Snow, executive director of the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board, says the three towns involved are very interested in the project and excited to see the final outcome.

“The towns of Bauline, Flatrock and Pouch Cove are committed to preserving and protecting their natural resources and this coastal resource inventory will provide the councils with up-to-date information to make informed decisions relating to environmental sustainability,” says Snow. “ Here at the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board, we are delighted to be collaborating with the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador to execute this project.”

This coastal resource inventory will be a follow-up to a Northeast Avalon resource inventory completed in 2001. It is expected to highlight the changes in the coastal resources over the last decade.
