Partner Organization: Faraja Trust Fund is a registered non-governmental organization established in 1991 in Morogoro, Tanzania. Faraja is an HIV/AIDS and community focused organization with a strong emphasis on youth and women. Farajas key programming activities are preventive HIV/AIDS education, HIV/AIDS care and counseling, income generating support for out-of-school youth, encouraging neighborhood womens associations and providing access to legal and human rights support. YCI has partnered with Faraja since 2005.

 Position Description: The position will work on realizing Goal 7: Improved Natural Resource Management from the Faraja Trust Fund Strategic Plan 2010-2014 Objective 1: To support the reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) initiative in Tanzania Objective 2: To introduce small-scale irrigation techniques to farmers.

      Support the reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation initiative (REDD) through awareness raising and training activities
      Introduce appropriate technologies and train communities in conservation farming
      Train communities on food preservation, marketing of surplus and water harvesting technologies
      Design and implement awareness raising, sensitization and training activities with staff and community members on small scale irrigation and climate change

 Desired Background and Qualifications:
      Post-secondary graduate in environmental science, agricultural science, conservation biology or related field
      Strong working knowledge of REDD, energy, water and farming conservation
      Demonstrated experience in conservation practice and planning and delivering training sessions to diverse stakeholders
      Ability to work in an environment with limited resources and minimal supervision
      Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      Good cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
      Possess a great deal of initiative and flexibility
      Prior overseas experience an asset

The Sierra Club Canada — Atlantic Canada Chapter is a non-profit
environmental organization based out of Halifax, NS. Sierra Club Canada is a
member-based organization that empowers people to protect, restore, and
enjoy a healthy and safe planet.

Our focus is on five overriding threats: loss of animal and plant species;
deterioration of the planet’s oceans and atmosphere; the ever-growing
presence of toxic chemicals in all living things; destruction of our
remaining wilderness; and spiralling population growth and over consumption.

Since 2003, the Atlantic Canada Chapter has been delivering environmental
education programs to elementary and high school students throughout the
Atlantic Provinces. The programs are all hands-on, interactive and
action-based!

Our high school education program continues to focus on sustainability and
the Ecological Footprint (TM) concept. Through a joint high
school-elementary school mentorship program called SierraBuddies, older
students assume leadership roles and deliver sustainability education to
younger children. We are seeking out an Educator to facilitate and lead this
program across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The incumbent will also be required to work on the deliverables of the
Atlantic Canada Sustainable Energy Coalition (ACSEC), reviewing and
developing sustainable energy/climate change policy for Newfoundland and
Labrador, and establishing a stakeholder committee to help with this work.

Our partner, Wildland tours is an eco-tourism company based in St. John’s,
Newfoundland because they care they support local environmental charities
and sustainable tourism activities. Since 1989, Wildland tours has donated
an annual $500 scholarship to the province’s oldest conservation
organization (The Natural History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador) with
linking activism with academia as the scholarship’s main criteria. Wildland
Tours is the longest continual supporter of the Protected Areas Association
(local World Wildlife Fund affiliate). They are active supporters of
numerous other environmental and sustainable tourism organizations including
the International Ecotourism Society.

Requirements/Qualifications:

– University degree or relevant experience in a field such as Biology,
Education, Recreation, Environmental Studies/Science, Public Policy
– Strong knowledge of climate change and energy policy
– Experience in environmental education working directly with children and
youth
– Familiarity with project budgeting and reporting
– Strong organizational, management, and supervision skills
– Strong fundraising experience
– Strong communication skills
– Highly independent worker
– Experience with non-profit organizations
– Valid driver’s license
– Familiarity with energy policy in Newfoundland and Labrador would be an
asset
– Access to car will be considered an asset
– Bilingualism is not mandatory but will be considered an asset

The Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM)/ Le réseau canadien d’éducation et de communication relatives à l’environnement, is Canada’s only, national, bilingual, network for environmental education and communication. EECOM is a membership based, charitable organization that is multi-disciplinary, multi-regional, multi-cultural and multisectoral. We work with provincial groups and multiple sectors to support and develop competency in educators, communicators, learners and consumers, and build capacity for environmental learning and sustainability. The Executive Director (ED) manages the day-to-day operations of EECOM and oversees all aspects of the organization including financial, personnel, and program delivery. This role is to be accomplished with the authority granted to the ED by the Board. The ED is accountable to the Board of Directors, and must ensure that all activities are in accordance and alignment with EECOM’s mission, vision, operating values, guiding principles, and policies. EECOM does not maintain a physical office. The Executive Director will be expected to work out of his/her personal home or make other arrangements for office space.
