Just Get Out – 2015

Just Get Out is a fun overnight workshop full of hands-on activities that will offer participants the chance to improve their leadership skills for taking children outdoors. It is intended for teachers, parents, early childhood educators, education students and non-formal educators. It will give you the chance to “un-plug”, enjoy the peace of the boreal forest, eat delicious, healthy meals, and participate in engaging, hands-on learning with other educators! This year’s workshop will offer some of the great activities from previous years, but will also include several new sessions, designed to cater to a range of age groups, from pre-school to high school.

Date:
Friday- Saturday, November 20th-21st, 2015

Location:
Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre (bus available from St. John’s and Salmonier Line)

Registration:
**Transportation by bus and all meals are included in registration fee**
$140 ($125 early-bird to November 1st)
(Memorial University students may qualify for an additional discount… get in touch to find out more!).

Family Rate:
$25 – ages 12 and under
$35 – ages 13-16

Goals of workshop:
Participants will:
– Improve leadership skills for taking kids outdoors
– Learn practical activity ideas, and identify useful resources
– Have fun and meet like-minded educators
– Enjoy the peace and beauty of the boreal forest in the fall

NLEN Nature Photo Fundraising Event

NLEN is looking for photograph donations from talented photographers across Newfoundland and Labrador to raise money for our networking initiatives.   Be it the ocean, sky, coast, forest, or the creatures that live within these spheres, all photographs are to be showcased on our website, and donated as a possible framed piece in our fundraising raffle draw (September 2015).  Winner of the draw will select one photograph to be printed and framed (generously donated by Spurrell Gallery, Long’s Hill, St. John’s).  We look forward to seeing the mystic landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador through the lenses of our visitors and residents.  For more information, please contact: nlen.ed@gmail.comDSCN0547

The Western Environment Centre is proud to announce the launch of their new E-BikeShare Pilot Project. From now until the end of November (weather permitting), members of the public can rent an electric bicycle for just $10 a day to get around the hilly landscape of Corner Brook without breaking a sweat! Look for the bikes at the Residence Complex on the Grenfell campus of Memorial University or in front of Cycle Solutions at 35 West Street. Outdoor Education Assistant Position

NLESD Western Region is hiring an outdoor education assistant (term position) to help with the spring delivery of our Residential Outdoor Education Program at Killdevil Camp in Gros Morne National Park.  There are more details in the attached job ad. Please distribute to your contacts. 

Note that the deadline to apply is coming up soon – Wednesday, May 6 – with the position to start May 20th.   Resume and cover letter should be emailed, faxed, dropped off or mailed to the school board office in Corner Brook as per the attached job ad (not emailed to me).

Volunteer Positions, The Osprey, Nature Newfoundland and Labrador

Nature Newfoundland and Labrador (http://naturenl.ca) is hoping to find dynamic and committed individuals, awed by the rugged natural beauty of our province, to help with various aspects of The Osprey, the Nature journal of Newfoundland and Labrador. These volunteer positions allow both literary expression and interaction with leading naturalists from our province.

The Osprey is a published four times per year. It is distributed both electronically and in hard copy to a readership that spans Canada, the US, and Europe. The journal publishes articles ranging from seasonal bird reports and discussions of important undertakings in the province with the potential to impact the environment, to nature photography and poetry.

Editorial Team: Editorial team members are responsible for review and layout articles for publication. Compile articles for publication. Editing, word processing, and excellent communication skills are required. Experience in basic graphic design and desktop publishing would be an asset!

Contributors: Contributors are sought to submit articles on a range of environmental and nature topics.

Photographers: Photographers will contribute stock and feature photos to accompany articles in the Osprey. All photos will be attributed to the photographer.

Artists / Graphic artists: Artists will assist with producing graphics and infographics to support Osprey articles. Graphic artists will also help design and develop Nature NL advertisements for various programming (indoor and outdoor programs, Nature Nook, etc).

Social Media Coordinator(s):  The social media coordinators will moderate the social media outlets for Nature NL and be responsible in developing a social media strategy that coincides with the organization’s communications plan.
