Nature NL Talk: Landbird Species at Risk in Newfoundland and Labrador

Krista Baker, Canadian Wildlife Service – Environment Canada

7:30 P.M. Thursday November 20, 2014

Memorial University, Science Building Room SN 2067

Since the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) was passed in 2002, seven landbird species found in Newfoundland and Labrador have been listed as Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern and three others are assessed as at-risk by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), but not yet listed under SARA.  One additional landbird species is listed provincially under the NL Endangered Species Act. The presentation will briefly introduce each species, describe the status of its recovery planning, outline proposed and ongoing recovery implementation, and summarize preliminary results. It will also identify ways that citizens can become involved with research and population recovery initiatives.

Krista Baker is a Species at Risk Biologist with Environment Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service in St. John’s and has been working in various roles related to conservation for more than 10 years.

Green Party Events this week in St. John's

Are looking to start something new, maybe looking for a place to talk about issues that are important to you and your family? Read on!

I wanted to write to you to let you know about a couple of great events this week in St. John’s.  Please join with, Marlene Wells, Atlantic organizer for the Green Party of Canada for an evening of conversation and networking.  There is no membership or donation required.  Just an open mind and a willingness to work together!  Come on out to meet some new people and start a conversation that will lead us into the Federal Election of 2015.

WHERE:  The Rocket Bakery, 272 Water St.

WHEN: Thursday, November 6th

TIME: 7-9PM

Then on Friday night please join with Marlene, and Elizabeth May, who will be reading from and answering questions about her new book, Who We Are: Reflections on My Life and Canada. She will also be conducting a public talk. In this marriage of memoir and manifesto, Elizabeth provides personal perspectives on her approach to politics, policy, and what it means to be Canadian.

This book is an argument for our future, the future of our children, and our grandchildren and generations beyond.  It is about how diminished democracy undermines our best hope to avoid the worsening of the climate crisis, accelerating to threaten human civilization itself.  It is a book about how we can make a difference.

Greg Malone, Actor, Political Satirist and Writer, will welcome and introduce Elizabeth May.  Books will be available for purchase.

WHERE: Celestial Gallery, Johnson Geocentre, 175 Signal Hill Road

WHEN: Friday, November 7

TIME: 7PM
