The MUN Botanical Garden: Stakeholder Discussion

The MUN Botanical Garden is entering an exciting new phase and is seeking input from stakeholders for direction and priorities for the next five years. What key issues would benefit from the work of faculty, staff and students at the Botanical Garden? What research, teaching and learning, and public engagement opportunities can the Garden pursue in horticulture, wellness and the environment as it connects with your area of interest? What are the most effective approaches and programs that the Garden can use to advance this work?

A session will be held in Corner Brook on February 17 from 12:00 – 2:00pm in FA224. Your participation would be most appreciated. People with an interest in agriculture, horticulture, botany, climate change, folklore, food security, public engagement, public art and performance, education, and visitor experience are particularly encouraged to attend.

A light lunch will be provided. Please email Sandy Brennan at sbrennan@mun.ca to RSVP.

ACAP Humber Arm Coastal Matters Presentation

Does Canada Need A Marine Species At Risk Act?  Canada’s primary conservation law for species at risk of extinction is the Species at Risk Act. The conservation community is well aware that marine fish are rarely listed – and as a result, severely depleted fish stocks aren’t getting the protection they need for recovery. But is SARA the right tool for the job, or do we need something designed specifically for the needs of marine fish?

ACAP Humber Arm invites you to join our next Coastal Matters presentation where Dr. Brett Favaro of the Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland will share his thoughts on these questions, followed by a q&a with the audience.  This talk will take place 12:30 to 1:20pm, Wednesday, February 3rd in room 2016 of the Arts and Science Building, Grenfell Campus.

As with all Coastal Matters presentations this session is free of charge and open to the public; rsvp’s not required.  Tea and coffee will be available; feel free to bring your own bagged lunch.  Please help us promote this session by forwarding this email to your contacts and/or displaying the attached poster at your workplace.

Conservation Corps NL Environmental and Cultural Hiring Opportunity (ECHO) Program

ECHO Application FinalECHO Application Guide 2016 FinalGreen Team or ECHO ProgramEnvironmental and Cultural Hiring Opportunity (ECHO) Program is designed to build strong connections between youth and local organizations, communities, and municipalities by providing students (ages 15-30) with training and employment opportunities through paid work placements with community-based organizations.

Each ECHO project placement must have an environmental or cultural focus. Each project must provide a direct or indirect benefit to the community in which it takes place, be completed using the resources at hand, and provide meaningful work and learning experiences to the students.

Some of the outstanding features of this program include:

  • Proposed work placements can be for individual student work, or as part of a larger project.
  • Wage subsidy: CCNL will contribute 75% of the cost of student placements while the community partner is responsible to contribute only 25%.
  • Students hired through the ECHO program will be paid at a rate of $11.50/hour.
  • Community partners can apply for a maximum of two ECHO students.
  • Community Partners can apply for 8, 12 or 15 week placements.  (Community Partners will have the choice to avail of a reduced duration if partial funding is granted.)
  • CCNL will be responsible for administering funds, assisting with recruitment and hiring, payroll, primary supervision, safety orientation and training, and provide some safety equipment for student placements.
  • Community partners devise work plans to meet the needs of the organization or community.

All the details for the ECHO Program can be found in the attached documents or at http://www.ccnl.ca/news-and-events/current-news/

The deadline for the ECHO Program is February 19, 2016.

In addition to this brand new program, CCNL is also accepting applications for our 2016 Green Team employment program.  Our flagship program has been a tremendous resource for communities across Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 20 years and we look forward to another exciting season of employment opportunities for youth and working with our incredible partners to enhance and restore communities around the province!  All Green Team Program details can be found at http://www.ccnl.ca/programs/green-team/
