Children’s Wish Foundation & Ever Green Recycling Greenest Office Challenge 2011

The goal is simple: To increase beverage container recycling efforts within the business/office place all while raising funds to grant wishes for children in NL suffering from life threatening illnesses.

How does it work?

The competition runs from Mar 23rd – Dec 24th 2011.Once registered for the competition, we will mail you your Ever Green Recycling Card. When your office/business brings in your beverage containers to one of Ever Green’s four locations, just swipe your card – the system will generate bar-coded stickers. Place the stickers on the bags; deposit them in the storage container. And you’re done, free to go about the rest of your busy day. Throughout the competition, emails will be sent to each participating company showing:

  • Your teams current amount raised in dollars, which will be directed to support the Children’s Wish Foundation
  • Our overall Carbon Footprint, and positive effect on the environment
  • And of course your place in the standings

 Why should we participate?

  • During this challenge, 100% of your beverage containers’ recycling dollars will help grant wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.
  • To Reduce Reuse Recycle & Respect the environment.
  • Along with supporting Children’s Wish Foundation, your recycling efforts will help Ever Green to advance mental health employees in integrated workplaces.
  • To win the 2011 title of “Children’s Wish Foundation & Ever Green Recycling Greenest Office 2011.”

 What’s in it for us?

Simply, a better and greener future. The chance to grant a wish to a child with a life threatening illness, and to support mental health employment.

The winning team will receive a Tree Planting Ceremony, in honour of their dedication to the environment as “Children’s Wish Foundation & Ever Green Recycling Greenest Office 2011” during Environment Week 2012.

Moose, Wind, and Black Earth: Gardening in Western Newfoundland

Western Environment Centre presents: Moose, Wind, and Black Earth: Gardening in Western Newfoundland

Thursday, May 12, 8 pm

College of the North Atlantic, Corner Brook – Room 207

Anne Marceau and Michael Burzynski have worked and gardened in Rocky Harbour for 22 years. Using photographs, they will discuss some of the techniques that work best for growing vegetables (and flowers) with local soils and weather conditions. Among other things, the talk will explore: composting, raising early crops in greenhouse and cold frame, using row covers to lengthen the growing season, growing unusual vegetables, beating the wind, keeping records.

Michael Burzynski and Anne Marceau are naturalists with backgrounds in biology and a long-standing interest in plants, both wild and cultivated. Their garden in Rocky Harbour was featured in Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine in 2009.

East Coast Trail “Tely Hike” and Team Fundraising Campaign

We need a little help to take care of the Trail.

The East Coast Trail “Tely Hike”, our annual fundraising event, is scheduled to take place at Torbay on June 4th.  Our objective this year is to raise $100,000. The money raised will be invested directly into Trail infrastructure through our trail maintenance, restoration and development program.

For example, the 220 km of Trail between Fort Amherst and Cappahayden has been in-service for 15 years. It has received significant hiker traffic and been impacted by many storms.  The trail damage inflicted by Hurricane Igor combined with an aging infrastructure has presented the Association with many unexpected challenges. And the task ahead is a major challenge for a charitable, volunteer based organization like ours.

We need your help to raise money for the Trail. On May 4th we will begin the Team Fundraising Campaign. Please checkout the “2011 Tely Hike” page on our website eastcoasttrail.com to obtain all the information and forms your need to support your team and/or individual fund raising efforts.

The success of this campaign is dependent on our members active participation and support.  If you love the Trail, get involved and form a team, the maximum team size is ten.  Invite your family, relatives, friends, neighbors, fellow hikers, and co-workers to join with you. Set a fundraising target and get out there and have fun doing it.  Sell your community and company on the need to support the Trail by showing them your passion and love for this great community resource called the East Coast Trail.

Your fund raising contribution will make you eligible for the following prizes:

1.     Top Fundraising Team: Enjoy a morning kayaking in Cape Broyle with Stan Cook and a dining experience at Chafe’s Landing in Petty Harbour for a group of ten.

2.     Top Fundraising Individual: win hiking boots, shirt and backpack from the Outfitters.

We hope to see you and your team on June 4th for a great hike, food and music, and to celebrate the Tely Hike and the Official Opening of the Trail between Middle Cove and Flatrock  . . . all happening on International Trails Day.

We need your support. Please take the time to fit this request into your schedule and help us to make the 11th East Coast Trail “Tely Hike” a fundraising success.

How to say ‘Toilet’ in Fourteen Languages

Members and friends of the Humber Natural History Society – here is our May presentation:

How to say ‘Toilet’ in Fourteen Languages

Date & Time: TuesdayMay 17, 2011, 7:30pm

Guest Speakers: Tina Leonard, Quitter

Location: Grenfell Campus, MUN LC301

In February 2010, my sister and I bought Round-the-World plane tickets, quit our jobs as psychologist and ecologist, and headed out to see the world for a year or until our dollars ran out, whichever came first. Fourteen countries, 29 flights, 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 10,000 smiles, and 213 days of incredible people and places made for an unforgettable experience. Come see photos and learn a little about the Hmong hilltribe peoples in Vietnam, endangered Orangutans in Borneo, Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, Hagia Sophia in Turkey, and how to go for 8 months with just a passport, a 30 L pack, and your sister.

The Public is Welcome!    Bring a Friend! See You There!
