Nature NL – Two June Events

Two June Events

Our June meeting will be a Walk Around Mundy Pond
June 16 @ 6:30 pm

Join Nature NL for a guided nature walk around Mundy Pond on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 pm. Megan Boucher will talk about the birds that historically  frequent the area, hopefully locating some of them during our walk. We will also give a short overview of the history of the Mundy Pond community with a look at the changes to the pond itself over the past century. We will meet in the parking lot across from the Mews Center.

Our Annual Charlie Horwood Memorial Pink Lady Slipper Orchid Walk
June 18 @ 10:00 am

NatureNL has an annual short fieldtrip on Mount Scio to view the pink lady slipper orchids. Initially the walk was led by Charlie Horwood, a long-time natural historian and a founding member of NatureNL. Since his death, we have continued the traditional outing as the Charlie Horwood Memorial Lady Slipper Walk. While the re-growth and development of trails in the area have markedly reduced their numbers, we normally see several hundred blooms in the 75 minute easy walk.

Meet leader Allan Stein on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 10:00 am at the MUN Vivarium Parking Lot, off Mount Scio Road, opposite and a bit east of the MUN Botanical Garden entrance. Park in the paved lot off that roadway, on the right very near Mount Scio Road.

Breezes, Breath, and Bellows – World Listening Day

(not all of the bellows will be in an accordion)

Last year, in conjunction with the UN International Year of Soils, we celebrated the earth element and “tasted the place” with wild edibles.  The theme of the events in The Boreal Poetry Garden this summer is the element of the air, especially the wind.

(Boreal means northern, from Boreas, the Greek god of the north wind—the strongest and speediest of all winds. He was the bringer of snow and hail but, at times, he could be nice and calm as well.)
Sunday 17 July at 2 pm (rain date Monday 18 July at 7 pm)
Wednesday 20 July at 7 pm (rain date Thursday 21 July at 7 pm)
The Boreal Poetry Garden, Portugal Cove

Join us for a walk, some words, a woodwind, an accordion, and two moose horns in the woods:
Christine Carter, clarinet and principal moose horn; Marlene Creates, poetry; Florian Hoefner, accordion; and Don McKay, poetry and assistant principal moose horn.

These events are being held in conjunction with World Listening Day, an initiative of The World Listening Project—an annual global event held in July to create awareness of the soundscape in our surroundings: http://www.worldlisteningproject.org

Limited to 25 people. Advance registration required.
For directions and to register:
adults $25 | seniors and students $20 | children $10
