Climate Change Discussion

As you may be aware, the Government of Canada has launched a new interactive website to gather input from the public on how to address climate change and promote clean growth.

To gather ideas, I am partnering with the Department of Geography at Memorial University, to hold a session (world café style) to get your ideas on what governments and individuals can do to reduce and adapt to climate change.

Please see attached for a presentation that includes questions and topics on which we are seeking your input. Specifically we would like to hear your ideas on:

  • How and where to reduce emissions
  • Ideas for new technology and job creation
  • How to put a price on carbon
  • Preparing for the impacts of climate change
  • General ideas on climate change reduction

You (or a representative) are invited to join us at 9:30am on Friday, May 27 at Memorial University.

Your RSVP would be appreciated by noon Wednesday, May 25 to Jennifer.Burley@canada.ca as it will help us to plan accordingly and to provide you with additional logistical information.

I look forward to discussing these important subjects with you.  Your ideas will be inputted to the portal to be considered in the development of the pan-Canadian framework on climate change and clean growth.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Jennifer Burley with any questions or comments.

Charlie Horwood Memorial Lady Slipper Walk

Saturday, June 18, 2016,  10:00 am.
Leader:  Allan Stein | arstein@mun.ca  | (709)895-2056

Meet at the MUN Vivarium Parking Lot, off Mount Scio Road, opposite and a bit east of
the MUN Botanical Garden entrance. Park in the paved lot off that roadway, on the right very near Mount Scio Road.
NatureNL has an annual short fieldtrip on Mount Scio to view the pink lady slipper orchids.  Initially the walk was led by Charlie Horwood,
long-time natural historian and a founding member of NatureNL.  Since his death, we have continued the traditional outing as the Charlie Horwood Memorial Lady Slipper Walk.  While the re-growth and development of trails in the area have markedly reduced their numbers, we normally see several hundred blooms in the 75 minute easy walk.

Webinar: A National Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI): The Bay of Fundy Pilot Project

 Time: 0900-1000 Atlantic Daylight Time – 17 May 2016.

A spatial data infrastructure provides for integrated management of spatial data, information and services. A Hydrographic Office, like the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS), is uniquely placed to play a central role in the development of the marine component of SDI’s since hydrography forms the key “core geography” layer for the sea space in a particular country or region. The webinar will describe the MSDI pilot project being conducted by the CHS in the Bay of Fundy.

To join the webinar please rsvp to coinatlantic@dal.ca by 16 May 2016.

NatureNL May Public Lecture: NCC’s Salmonier River Conservation Project

Nature Conserv Nature NL

Please join us for Lanna Campbell’s (NL Program Director, NCC) presentation on “NCC’s Salmonier River Conservation Project”

on Thursday May 19, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Building, Room SN2067, on the MUN campus.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has been working in NL for twenty years. During that time our securement work has spanned the Island, though the emphasis has been on Southwest Newfoundland. The Salmonier River Conservation Project represents a new area for NCC in NL. The area is important ecologically for a number of reasons: the forest landscape is largely intact, there is habitat for a diversity of rare lichens, and the river has a healthy population of wild Atlantic salmon. NCC’s consistent path of conducting science, securing land, and leading stewardship and engagement is underway within the Salmonier Conservation Project. Whether we are taking care of our current properties, or having discussions with willing landowners about securing new ones, NCC hopes to continue to help conserve this unique part of the province for generations to come.

Lanna Campbell is the Program Director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador. Originally from the mainland, Lanna grew up on a family farm in rural Quebec. She has an undergraduate degree in Geography and Environmental Studies from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, and a Masters of Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. During her academic work she had the opportunity to travel throughout Atlantic Canada, pursuing forest ecology research from Yarmouth Nova Scotia, to Main River, Newfoundland. Lanna has held a variety of positions following school: an instructor at Mount Allison University in the Department of Geography and Environment; an outreach coordinator for a community-based watershed group, an environmental scientist at a large-scale consulting firm, and finally a program director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. A self-proclaimed ‘Newfoundlander by Choice’, Lanna is honoured to be working on land conservation in a province that has magnificent natural capital. She lives in Quidi Vidi with her husband, 1-year old daughter, black Labrador, and orange cat.
