NL Nature Atlas Launch

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to invite you to the launch of the NL Nature Atlas!
The NL Nature Atlas is an interactive website that showcases Labrador’s unique natural landscapes. Using the Atlas you can explore information about the region’s plants and animals, make maps, download spatial information, and collaborate with others. This is the first geographical tool of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador, and is the result of a collaboration between NCC and Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Join us as guest speakers share their experiences with Labrador nature while taking you on a live geo-tour using the NL Nature Atlas. You will also have the opportunity to win prizes by taking our interactive trivia challenge. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
We hope you can join us in telling the story at one of the following events.

'Aquaculture – Balancing Science, Engineering, Business and Socioeconomics' with Dr. Laura Halfyard

The November WISE NL-Statoil Speaker Series lecture features Dr. Laura C. Halfyard, Gen. Mgr. Sunrise and Connaigre Fish Farms Inc. In her talk titled ‘Aquaculture – Balancing Science, Engineering, Business and Socioeconomics’, Dr. Halfyard will focus on environmentally sustainable aquaculture practices in Newfoundland and Asia. She will talk about her family’s commercial organic mussel farming operation in rural NL, with discussion of the importance of balancing socioeconomic impacts on communities, global market trends, and the need for investment in science and engineering technology to improve efficiencies. Other sustainable farming practices in Asian countries, such as rice-fish-animal integrated systems, will show the role of women, men and children in maintaining these farms and reaping the benefits. Sustainable farmed (i.e. salmon and mussels in NL) and wild fisheries will be critical to our future global food supply and our NL economy. Dr. Halfyard will also discuss her life choices in science and education career pathways that began with growing up in outport NL, to working with the coastal ocean environment and a life of travel.

Join us on November 19th, from 7:15 – 8:30pm at The Fluvarium. All are welcome and the event is free. For more information and to register visit: http://wisenl.ca/programs-and-events/wise-nl-statoil-speaker-series/

Nature NL Talk: Landbird Species at Risk in Newfoundland and Labrador

Krista Baker, Canadian Wildlife Service – Environment Canada

7:30 P.M. Thursday November 20, 2014

Memorial University, Science Building Room SN 2067

Since the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) was passed in 2002, seven landbird species found in Newfoundland and Labrador have been listed as Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern and three others are assessed as at-risk by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), but not yet listed under SARA.  One additional landbird species is listed provincially under the NL Endangered Species Act. The presentation will briefly introduce each species, describe the status of its recovery planning, outline proposed and ongoing recovery implementation, and summarize preliminary results. It will also identify ways that citizens can become involved with research and population recovery initiatives.

Krista Baker is a Species at Risk Biologist with Environment Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service in St. John’s and has been working in various roles related to conservation for more than 10 years.
