Hire an Environmental Tech Work Term Student!

Invitation to Participate

Co-operative Education students from the Environmental Technology program and the Civil Engineering Technology program at the Corner Brook campus of the College of the North Atlantic will be competing for 12- to 16-week spring/summer work terms commencing May, 2014 and ending August, 2014.

The students have a wide range of civil engineering and environmental skills in the technical, academic and personal management areas to bring to co-op employers.  Please consider the benefits of hiring a co-op student from the College. Our Civil Engineering Technology program and Environmental Technology Co-op program represents a proven human resource development strategy by incorporating classroom and workplace learning, while providing an opportunity to meet short-term employment needs for the employer.

You can find out more about our Civil Engineering Technology and Environmental Technology Co-op programs and curriculum at www.cna.nl.ca or please contact Joanne Kendrick, the Co-operative Education Coordinator responsible for the co-op placements for these programs.  Please ask if you qualify for SECPAP wage subsidy funding for hiring our work term students.

I invite you to participate in the Civil Engineering Technology and Environmental Technology Co-operative Education process through the hiring of one of our students for the upcoming spring/summer semester.  I look forward to facilitating your recruitment, and thank you for your support of co-operative education.

I hope to hear from you – Thanks!

Let's Talk Energy Week!

Energy underpins today’s quality of life, and it will greatly affect the lives and well-being of generations to come. Let’s Talk Energy, an initiative of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation working with a network of partners across Canada, aims to increase Canadians’ understanding of energy and to engage them in considering their energy future, so that they can make informed energy decisions and choices.

New in 2014, the Let’s Talk Energy partners are encouraging Canadians in all regions and all sectors of society to participate in Let’s Talk Energy Week, which takes place from February 21 to 28, 2014. This first-ever energy awareness week is an opportunity for individuals and groups across the country to discuss and learn about energy, by planning an event or activity in their community, or by participating in an event during the week. Resources and information about energy events and activities across Canada can be found at letstalkenergy.ca

How will your organization participate in Let’s Talk Energy Week to support the energy conversation?

Please feel free to get in touch withLet’s Talk Energy Week coordinator, Nori Gowan at 613-993-2271 or at ngowan@technomuses.ca, to discuss any ideas or questions you may have about the week.

I hope we can count on your support of our efforts to enhance Canadians’ energy literacy.

For your information, a copy of the Wild Things Scholarship announcement is appended below.  It provides information about the scholarship and the type of applicant we are seeking (i.e., volunteers for nature who currently attend a post-secondary institution or intend to do so). I am sending this information to a wide range of people and institutions. Please circulate this announcement to any individuals, groups, and/or institutions that are likely to be in contact with potential applicants.

To apply, potential applicants should go to our website (www.naturenl.ca) and click on the Scholarship tab where they will find instructions for applying online or via paper copy.

**********

The 2013 Recipient of the Wild Things Scholarship
We awarded the 2013 Wild Things Scholarship to Emma Power, a student at Queen Elizabeth Regional High School, Conception Bay South. This scholarship recognizes a student in the province whose volunteer efforts have made a significant contribution to the enhancement and conservation of nature. Emma’s dedication to volunteering to enhance the natural beauty of her hometown, along with her natural leadership abilities and strong academic record, made her a highly deserving scholarship recipient. She plans to attend Memorial University upon gradation to pursue a career in medicine or marine biology.

Emma served as Chair of her high school’s Ecological Crusaders group and participated regularly in the Eco-Mentors program for Earth Day. Her most impressive achievement to date, however, was her successful campaign to bring curbside recycling to the town of Conception Bay South. Power started a letter writing campaign directed to the town council and the local paper and an on-line petition directed to the Mayor and the Director of Public Works in which she highlighted the importance of curbside recycling for her rapidly growing community. Due in large part to her efforts, a curbside-recycling program started in CBS in October 2013.

Letter to Environmental Groups from Canadian Environment Network

Dear supporters, friends and members of RCEN,

We all remember the unfortunate news we received in October 2011, when the federal Government had unilaterally cancelled its funding agreement with us. On October 14, 2011, CBC reported that the Canadian Environmental Network was closing its doors. Ten days ago, we served notice we are still here by holding a special members meeting of the RCEN. Most importantly, we voted on a new membership dues structure that will help us to rebuild.

For two years, the RCEN has been running with no staff and very limited funds. As a result, we have been much slower in the rebuilding process than we had hoped. We have been through some complicated legal issues, a corporate restructuring and earlier this year approved new bylaws: http://rcen.ca/sites/default/files/bylaw_no8_march_19.pdf. We have moved out of our former office in Vanier, and made arrangements to keep important records at the Sierra Club Foundation in Ottawa. We have also gotten our taxes and financial statements up to date – no mean feat for a volunteer board that has no budget or staff, but has to deal with the legacy of completing the records of what was once a million dollar budget organization.

Now for the next stage, we need your support. The RCEN is nothing without its membership. We are reaching out to environmental groups across the country to join us as paid members. We believe networking together, environmental organizations can achieve more than individually.

Some of our caucuses are still active; others need your input and energy to reactivate. The structure is there. We just need to build on it.

We have approved the following structure for membership fees:

• For groups with an annual budget of less than $25,000: $35

• For groups with an annual budget of equal to or over $25,000 : $100/year;

• For supporting members : $250/year (supporting members will receive special mention on our website);

Discount for members of Affiliates (BC Environmental Network, Alberta Environmental Network, OEN, Manitoba Eco-Network, SEN, New Brunswick Environmental Network, Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Network, Ontario Environment Network, Nova Scotia Environmental Network, Saskatchewan Eco-Network, Secrétariat des organismes environnementaux du Québec, PEI Eco-Net):

• For members of a recognised affiliate network a $20 discount is offered.

We have also approved a Class B membership for individuals: $35/year; Class B members do not have voting rights at the AGM, but do have the ability to participate in caucuses.

Membership fees are on an annual basis, to be renewed before March 31. This year, memberships pledged before March 31, 2014 will be valid until March 31, 2015.

Thank you for your support. Please contact me if you would like to apply for membership in the RCEN.

With your membership, we will be on our way to rebuilding the organization and building a truly national and independent network of environmental organizations.
