Labrador Coordinator (Protected Areas Association of NL)

Protected Areas Association of NL (PAA) seeks a Labrador Coordinator to assist in the establishment of Eagle River Provincial Park.  Position to be based in Labrador.

PAA seeks an energetic, outgoing person for community outreach, participation in public meetings/events, organizing public meetings and presentations to schools and other groups, communicating PAA’s position and mandate to other organizations, representing PAA as a liaison with other non-profit groups, community groups, and government agencies.

This person will be the public representative of PAA in Labrador, will develop outreach materials, write correspondence and articles for media, work on the designation of Eagle River Provincial Park, handle general inquiries pertaining to Labrador and distribute PAA promotional material at local conferences, workshops and fairs.

The Labrador Coordinator will build PAA membership base in Labrador, work with the PAA team in project and organizational planning, prepare input for proposals/reports, maintain knowledge base on Labrador including local resource use, possible resource conflicts and local industry issues.

This position will be a one year contract and is a Job Creation Partnership pending funding, with the possibility of extension.  Applicants must be EI eligible. Those from the Cartwright area with a good knowledge of the Eagle River and a conservation background will receive preference.

About the Office Manager Position:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Office Manager will act as front line staff for the organization and will work with project staff and board members to achieve the following key duties:

  • Handle routine office procedures such as emails, phone calls, filing, photocopying, mailings, and word processing
  • Record and distribute minutes for teleconferences, project meetings, and other events
  • Assist bookkeeper with data entry
  • Manage payroll and accounts payable
  • Coordinate logistics for events and meetings (space rental, catering, materials, supplies)
  • Develop monthly board meeting materials (staff reports, work plans, agendas)
  • Draft letters of support, submissions, other written materials
  • Proof read content for proposals, materials, submissions, etc.
  • Monitor and maintain office inventory and supplies
  • Maintain and update the FSN Food Security Initiative Inventory
  • Complete administrative duties for FSN projects (maintaining financial and narrative reports, administering payments)
  • Provide other project support as required

Requirements:

  • Experience using computer software including Microsoft Office 2007 (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.) and Simply Accounting
  • Experience in office administration and clerical work
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Exceptional organizational and office management abilities
  • Post-secondary training or equivalent experience/skill set
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Interest in food security

Experience with non-profit organizations and a commitment to working from a community-focused development perspective will be strong assets. Valid driver’s License and access to car is an asset.

Hours & Compensation:

Salary range for this position will be $15-$16/hr for 20 hrs per week, commensurate with relevant experience.

Special Events / Office Assistant – PAA

Forest Issues Coordinator Assistant

Deadline: Friday, June 3, 2011

Primary responsibility is to help coordinate community outreach and research in the field of sustainable community forests in Newfoundland and Labrador and develop environmental campaigns and educational programs.

More specifically, your responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with individuals, industries, community groups, businesses, non-governmental agencies, and governments to build formal and informal partnerships with regards to sustainable forest issues in NL
  • Organizing the Coalition for Sustainable Forests in NL
  • Providing updates for the cpawsnl website
  • Providing support and coordination for the Board of Directors and the volunteer Stakeholder Committee
  • Implementing projects based on CPAWS-NL’s comprehensive mission and vision statements
  • Promoting and marketing the organization

 

This is a SWASP position

Students are required to complete a 280-hour community service placement (normally over 8 weeks) and will:

  • Develop transferable employment skills;
  • Receive career-related experience;
  • Establish future employment networks in the voluntary community-based and public sectors;
  • Receive a $1,400 Tuition Voucher, redeemable at any recognized post-secondary institution; and
  • Receive an $1,400 stipend over the course of the placement.

ELIGIBILITY
Students must meet ALL these criteria (international students are NOT eligible):

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee under Immigration Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution on a full time basis in the coming academic year; and
  • Must have been registered as full time students in the previous academic year; and
  • Must be between 15 and 30 years old (inclusive); and
  • May NOT hold another full time job (30 hours per week or more) while on the SWASP placement; and
  • May NOT be attending classes full-time while on the SWASP placement.

Visitor Services Supervisor, MUN Botanical Garden

(Contractual Position from April 18, 2011 to December 2, 2011)

Duties:
The successful applicant will assist with information and visitor services at the Botanical Garden under the supervision of the Education Coordinator and the Environmental Education Assistant. 
Duties include assisting visitors; staffing the front desk and answering inquiries; booking school and group programs; staffing receptions and special events; answering the telephone and responding to or directing inquiries; processing cash, debit, and credit card transactions; supervising seasonal staff and volunteers; and performing other related duties as assigned.  Weekend and some evening work required.
 
Qualifications:
Extensive supervisory experience required; in customer service and retail environments an asset.  Graduation from high school, supplemented by related courses; or equivalent combination of experience and training.  Applicants must be able to work independently; possess excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; and be comfortable using a computer and the Microsoft Office suite.  Interest and or knowledge in Newfoundland gardening, natural history, and the outdoors would be an asset.
 
SALARY:                               $29,071 (pro-rated)
