The Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre, off Salmonier Line, is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person to help deliver their environmental programs to school children this fall until the end of November. Duties will include teaching grades 5 to 8 students and overnight supervision in a wilderness setting. Knowledge of Newfoundland’s natural history, environmental issues and a love of the outdoors are an advantage. Experience working with children is a great asset. An up to date certificate of conduct, a first-aid certificate and the ability to be flexible are essential. Own transport preferred, but carpooling may be available.

Marine Science Educator

ACAP Humber Arm is seeking a reliable and outgoing person for the position of Marine Science Educator.

Qualifications:

  •         Knowledge of marine science terminology and water quality issues
  •         Training or experience in using water quality testing devices
  •         Confident public speaker
  •         Experience working with groups of students an asset
  •         Willingness to work in outdoor setting aboard a large passenger vessel
  •         The ability to work independently
  •         The successful candidate will be asked to provide a certificate of conduct and complete first aid training.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the delivery of ACAP Humber Arm’s Trading Books For Boats program.  This includes

  •         Establishing schedule for participating classes (approximately 25 classes)
  •         Informing schools and school board bussing depot of bussing needs/schedule
  •         Providing background information and required forms to participating teachers
  •         Securing necessary supplies
  •         Calibrating equipment
  •         Delivering program:
  1. a powerpoint presentation on concepts and terminology
  2. on boat session on water quality issues including water quality testing conducted by students
  3. guide students through established learning stations and completion of workbook
  4. in-class follow-up (if requested by teacher)
  •         Data entry
  •         Program evaluation with teachers and students

Travel:

  •         A valid driver’s license and use of a private vehicle is required.  Mileage reimbursement is offered.

Term:

  •         Twelve week position with possibility for extension. 
  •         Variable Monday to Friday.
  •         35 hours per week.  Hours to vary within 8am to 4:30pm frame (no lunch break), Monday to Friday.

Campaigns/Organizing Job Description: For more than 6 years, the Polaris Institute has worked in collaboration with labour, environmental, youth and social justice groups, on a multi-year campaign to build support for our public water systems and challenge the social and environmental impacts of bottled water [see our site http://www.insidethebottle.org]. The Inside the Bottle campaign has provided tools and services such as, corporate research, rapid response analysis and web-based actions, to municipal governments, university/college campuses, high schools and community water groups. Campuses are running campaigns to urge their administrations to end the sale of bottled water on campus and provide more access to tap water for students. Students are playing a critical role in Canada and already 13 campuses have committed to ditch-the-bottle and back-the-TAP!

In this internship program, interns will take on significant projects to advance the Inside the Bottle campaign by building a team of activists on their own campus and in their region. Regional organizers will work in their targeted region with remote support from Polaris Institute’s Campaigns Coordinator in Ottawa. Organizers will develop water programs and targets while simultaneously coordinating and working with other student leaders on campuses in their region. The internship will include direct skills trainings on grassroots campaign planning, strategy, and tactics, student outreach, and advocacy.

Gardener/Landscaper/Assistant Contract (Common Ground)

    • Conducts public education about lead safe gardening and recreation in areas with elevated soil lead level
    • Conducts residential soil lead testing, develops landscaping remediation plans
    • Conducts demonstrations of phytoremediation, a process which uses plants to clean soil
    • Operates a downtown demonstration garden to promote lead safe gardening and sustainable urban agricultural practices.
  • Biochar Field Trials
    • Designed Atlantic Canada’s first successful field trial of biochar, an organic soil amendment which increases soil fertility, reduces water and fertilizer requirements and sequesters carbon in soil. Biochar can also be used for adsorption of soil contaminants.
  • Sustainable Greenhouse Demonstration Project
    • Plans include construction of an innovative energy-efficient greenhouse.

Common Ground is currently seeking to hire a Head Gardener/Landscaper to oversee activities associated with the Lead Safe Yard Pilot Project and the Safer Soil Demonstration Garden, and to provide some administrative and organizational assistance to the Common Ground Executive Director.

The successful applicant will report to the Executive Director and will be responsible for the following activities;

  • Overseeing the growing of food for local charities using lead safe gardening practices;
  • Organizing garden volunteers;
  • Conducting garden tours, organizing and delivering workshops and presentations on lead safe gardening;
  • Conducting residential soil tests, designing landscaping remediation plans, managing soil data and conducting homeowner education consultations;
  • Participate in construction of lead-safe landscaping demonstration models;
  • Overseeing phytoremediation demonstration sites and manage phytoremediation soil and plant data;
  • Overseeing biochar field trial and manage field trial data;
  • Provide administrative and organizational assistance to the Executive Director as required, which may include grant and report writing, event organizing, publicity and outreach, research and planning.

The successful applicant will be an outgoing, self-motivated and well organized individual who has a passion for sustainable food systems and community development. S/he will have the following qualifications and experience;

  • A great deal of experience in organic agriculture;
  • Landscaping experience;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Computer skills including word processing, simple graphic design and excel. Knowledge of Google Sketchup would be an asset.
  • Experience with environmental and/or social justice organizing, publicity and outreach.
  • Post secondary diploma or degree preferred. Educational background in chemistry, biology or business administration would be ideal.
  • Having access to own transportation would also be a definite asset.

Ideally, the candidate will be between 20 and 30 years of age. Salary will be $15 per hour for 30 – 35 hrs work per week (pending final funding approval). Some weekend work will be required (ie. for caring for plants, conducting workshops.)

This is a six week contract from mid-July to the end of August with a likely extension for an additional 12 weeks from early September through the end of November.

The Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program – Student Employment Positions

The Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program (KEEP) is an NGO dedicated to environmental conservation and education. KEEP is seeking outgoing and energetic post secondary students/graduates to fill the following positions:

2. Conservation intern

These positions include outdoor work and candidates should be prepared to work in inclement weather. NAACAP Outreach Assistant – Student employment

NAACAP is a non-profit organisation that works to protect and enhance the rivers of the Northeast Avalon region. We require an Outreach Assistant to help us with our volunteer and partner activities.

The Outreach Assistant will be involved with promoting/organising NAACAPs volunteer activities. As well, this person will work with other students on a wide range of activities to garner public support for river and water conservation.

The Outreach Assistant is expected to have a working knowledge of rivers, good writing skills, confidence and experience in dealing with the public and a willingness to learn new things. This person must have been a fulltime student within the last academic year.

NAACAP offers a friendly work environment. NAACAP will also give the outreach assistant the opportunity to become involved in our other river activities. This is an opportunity for the right student to take ownership of a project and be crucial to its success .

$12 per hour 35 hour week
