Job Opportunity: Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre

The Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre needs one or two enthusiastic and energetic people to help deliver their school environmental programs this fall. These exciting positions involve helping school children learn about and appreciate nature and their environment  through hands-on activities, primarily outdoors in a wilderness setting. Teaching experience and a familiarity with Newfoundland’s natural environment are assets.
A current certificate of conduct and valid first-aid certificate are essential. The Brother Brennan Centre is 70 km SW of St John’s in a wilderness location and having own transport helps, but car pooling may be possible. There will be one or maybe two ‘shifts’ a week which will involve staying overnight at the Centre on school days. The pay is $14 an hour – with sometimes 24 hours a week and sometimes 48 hours. The ability to be flexible really helps.

Job Opportunity: Energy Efficiency Program Coordinator

Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador (CCNL) is a non-profit organization with a mandate to provide young people with meaningful work, training and educational opportunities in the areas of environmental and cultural heritage conservation and enhancement. CCNL is now accepting applications for the following position.

Energy Efficiency Program Facilitator
In partnership with the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Newfoundland Power, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and the Department of Education:
The successful applicant will have primary responsibility for facilitating an energy efficiency program, designed for grades K-6, through presentations in schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Initiate contact with schools to promote energy efficiency presentations and resources;
• Deliver energy efficiency presentations to schools throughout the province;
• Participate in outreach events that help raise awareness of the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Newfoundland Power, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and CCNL;
• Maintain a detailed database of outreach activities, including numbers of people reached;
• Perform a variety of administrative support duties as required including evaluation and reporting.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
• Ability to deliver presentations in French an asset;
• Excellent facilitation and presentation skills;
• Strong organizational ability;
• Experience working with youth, educators and schools;
• Strong writing and public speaking ability;
• Media and public relations experience would be an asset;
• Experience/knowledge of energy efficiency would be an asset;
• Applicant must hold a valid class five driver’s license and have access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance;
• Successful candidate for this position will be required to provide a Criminal Records Check and/or Vulnerable Sector Check.

Location & Salary:
Position is based in St. John’s with travel throughout the province. Salary for the above position is based on $35,000 per annum for 35 hours per week for approximately 36 weeks. Anticipated start date of September 15, 2014. Funding approval for this position is pending. As such, CCNL reserves the right to cancel this position, should funding approval be declined.

Background

The Canadian Environmental Network was founded in 1977, as a non-profit, non-partisan environmental network that links environmental organizations from across Canada. After loss of federal funding, the organization has become totally volunteer based and is going through a period of renewal to rebuild its membership base, extend its networking capability and re-examine its services and programs.

The Canadian Environmental Network is looking for additional volunteers to help build the new virtual organization through work on a number of projects and programs. As a volunteer you will have a very direct role, working with Board members and other volunteers in determining the future of the organization and will be able to network with individuals and environmental organizations from across Canada. It will also provide you with an opportunity to put into practice your knowledge, expertise and skills.

What areas are we seeking volunteer help?

We are looking for creative enthusiastic volunteers that can either act as team members or take an active leadership role. More specifically, at this moment, RCEN is seeking volunteers with a knowledge, interest and preferably experience in Canadian environmental issues and/or the specific areas below.

  • Website Management (knowledge of the Drupal website content management system and website development would be highly desireable);
  • Media Services (including writing / editing; experience using internet media for social marketing highly desirable);
  • Membership Development and Services (developing a strategy to build a new membership base and identifying and building programs to serve them;
  • Support in Material Translation (English-French);
  • Support for RCEN Caucus Activities (e.g., the Health Caucus); and
  • A Co-ordinator for the Biodiversity Caucus (training will be available for this position)

Applications will be held for a year and applicants will be considered for other volunteer positions, as the need arises.

Commitment

Suggested commitment is at least 1-3 volunteer hours per week. Volunteers should also attend a monthly 1 hour conference call.

As RCEN has become a totally volunteer based virtual organization “without walls”, it makes extensive use of teleconferencing to link members and volunteers together. Consequently, as previously noted, volunteers should have access to a computer and the internet. You must be at least 18 years old. Please also indicate whether you will be available for volunteer activities over the summer period and/or available to start volunteering in September 2014.

Conservation Corps is now accepting applications for the following internship position.

Project Coordinator Intern

In partnership with the City of Mount Pearl

The Intern will work with communications staff to develop and implement a communication strategy designed to prevent littering through education and awareness. The Intern will engage corporate partners to take ownership of corporate grounds and ensure they are free of litter.  The Intern will work with municipal enforcement staff to develop an enforcement strategy and monitor results.  In addition, the successful candidate will organize community clean up events and promote them to encourage participation by residents, with a goal of creating a sustainable community commitment toward a clean and green city. Candidates for this position should have strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills; strong public relation skills and leadership ability; project coordination skills; the ability to work with minimal supervision; a demonstrated interest in environmental conservation and waste management issues would be considered an asset. Valid driver’s license and access to own vehicle with appropriate insurance considered an asset. Position based in Mount Pearl.

Salary for the above positions is $15.00 per hour for 35 hours per week for 27 weeks with an anticipated start date of June 16th, 2014. CCNL is a youth serving not-for-profit, therefore successful individuals to the above positions must be between the ages of 16 and 30.

The Western Environment Centre (WEC) is a charitable organization that is based in Corner Brook. Our organization strives to engage communities in environmental issues in a balanced, objective, and informed manner; work with community partners to build capacity and involvement in environmental projects; and create a community of environmentally pro-active citizens

We are seeking an independent, enthusiastic and reliable project coordinator to help plan and implement two projects:

1)   A Sustainable Food Skills Workshop Series

2)   An E-BikeShare Pilot Program

 

Duration and Salary

The job will be remunerated at $18/hour for 25 hours ($500) a week between June 2nd and October 31st (22 weeks).

 

There is the potential for re-hiring in April 2015 for the second stage of the e-bikeshare project.

 

Duties

The project coordinator will be responsible for the following duties related to both projects.

Sustainable Food Skills Workshop Series

  • Plan and carry out a series of 8 workshops on ecologically responsible food systems and sustainable food skills
  • Develop some workshop content using the Root Cellars Rock workshop resource
  • Organize, promote and present workshops
  • Oversee project budget
  • Write final report to funder
  • Present progress updates to the board as needed

 

E-BikeShare Pilot

  • Working with the project committee, develop a plan of implementation for the E-BikeShare rental program for spring 2015
  • Coordinate the purchase of e-bikes and/or e-bike kits
  • Plan and carry out a minimum of 3 bicycle-related events in summer/fall 2014 to promote e-biking
  • Seek out other events in the community as opportunities for program promotion
  • Seek out additional funding partners
  • Assist in the development of evaluation tools and documents, i.e. surveys, quarterly evaluation report
  • Collect, record and maintain data
  • Provide scheduled updates to WEC board, project partners and project funders as required
  • Manage project budget in collaboration with the WEC treasurer

 

Job Qualifications

At minimum, a partial or completed undergraduate degree/college diploma in an environmental-related discipline or equivalent job experience

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Excellent mathematical skills

Excellent organizational, time management and coordination skills

 

Assets

Some prior knowledge of food skills (gardening, cooking, canning), food system issues and sustainable transportation

Experience with media and public relations

Experience working with non-profit organizations

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Newfoundland and Labrador chapter is looking for an Environmental Educator to join our team this summer. Successful applicant will assist coordinator with ongoing projects and public outreach.

 

Duties specific to this position will include (but not limited to):

  • Working with the Witless Bay Puffin & Petrel Patrol Program
    • Rescuing stranded puffin and petrel chicks during nightly patrols
    • Releasing rescued chicks to the ocean
    • Assisting with weighing/banding of birds
    • Working with local communities and youth within the program
    • Educating communities/businesses about “Dimming unnecessary Lights”
  • Assisting with beach cleanups/hikes/etc.
